The attack occurred at Nelson’s Fish Camp, a location the Dituri family had visited multiple times as part of their vacation tradition. According to Brodie’s father, Peter Dituri, his son was an avid fishing enthusiast who never left home without his fishing rod. The young boy had just caught a fish and was bending down to release it when the alligator suddenly lunged and grabbed his arm.
Peter Dituri’s quick reaction may have saved his son’s life. Without hesitation, the father jumped on top of the alligator, attempting to pry open its powerful jaws. Law enforcement officers later told him that his instinctive response likely prevented the reptile from dragging Brodie into the water and performing its deadly roll maneuver. Bystanders at the scene also rushed to assist, a gesture that moved the father to tears as he expressed his gratitude.
The family has returned to their home in Pennsylvania, where Brodie is beginning his long road to recovery. Medical professionals have discussed both hand transplant surgery and prosthetic options with the family. For now, the young boy is leaning toward using a prosthetic device. The loss is particularly devastating as his right hand was dominant, which he used extensively for playing baseball and football.
