A massive federal undercover operation in Palm Beach County has resulted in 46 people facing charges and nearly 100 firearms being taken off the streets, authorities announced Thursday. The two-month initiative, dubbed Operation Hurricane, marks one of the most significant law enforcement crackdowns in South Florida this year.
The joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Department of Justice specifically targeted violent offenders, convicted felons with weapons, and drug trafficking networks. While most of those charged are now in custody, authorities confirmed that five suspects remain on the run.
Federal agents conducted more than 120 undercover operations and extensive surveillance throughout the investigation. Beyond the 94 seized firearms, law enforcement recovered substantial quantities of dangerous narcotics including cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin from the streets of Palm Beach County.
In a significant breakthrough, one suspect arrested during the operation was later connected to a recent West Palm Beach homicide. Investigators used the ATF’s national ballistic database to match a Glock handgun recovered during the sting to shell casings found at the murder scene, potentially solving a case that was just days old.
DOJ Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald emphasized the proactive nature of the operation. Officials stressed that rather than waiting for violent crimes to occur, this approach focuses on identifying and removing individuals believed to be driving violence in local communities. U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones praised the agents involved, stating their work is actively saving lives throughout South Florida.
