North Miami Beach Police Captain Faces Felony Video Voyeurism Charges

A shocking arrest has rocked the North Miami Beach Police Department after one of its captains was taken into custody on serious felony charges. Captain Jose Maya, 40, appeared before Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Mindy S. Glazer on Wednesday morning following his arrest on a warrant the previous night. He faces second-degree felony video voyeurism charges that have sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement community.

According to investigators, the alleged victim is Maya’s 23-year-old stepdaughter, who resided in the same household. The young woman reportedly noticed a small black object appearing beneath the bathroom door on multiple occasions while she was showering. Taking matters into her own hands, she set up her own recording device to capture the hallway, which authorities say helped confirm her suspicions.

The evidence gathered by the stepdaughter proved crucial to the investigation. The arrest affidavit describes footage showing Maya lying flat on his stomach, allegedly using a cellphone and another recording device to capture video of the victim from underneath the bathroom door. Law enforcement officers arrived at Maya’s Southwest Miami-Dade residence Tuesday evening to execute the arrest warrant, and a large black SUV was subsequently towed from the location.

Judge Glazer set bond at $7,500 and issued a strict no-contact order, prohibiting Maya from communicating with his alleged victim through any means, whether directly, indirectly, in person, in writing, by phone, or through third parties. As of Wednesday afternoon, Maya remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

North Miami Beach Police Chief Juan Pinillos confirmed that Maya has been relieved of duty while the criminal case and an internal administrative investigation proceed. The chief described the allegations as deeply concerning and a serious breach of public trust. The department stated it is fully cooperating with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation, and emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability.
