JetBlue Grows at Fort Lauderdale, Welcomes Former Spirit Workers

JetBlue Airways is making a significant move to strengthen its presence at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, seizing the opportunity left by Spirit Airlines’ departure from the market. The carrier plans to boost its daily operations from 130 to approximately 150 flights by year’s end.

JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty revealed that the company had been strategically preparing for this moment as Spirit struggled with financial difficulties. The budget carrier’s two bankruptcy filings signaled trouble ahead, allowing JetBlue to position itself for growth in South Florida.

As part of the expansion, JetBlue is actively recruiting across multiple departments and specifically reaching out to former Spirit crew members who lost their jobs. This hiring initiative offers a lifeline to displaced aviation workers while helping JetBlue meet increased operational demands.

Former Spirit customers wondering about pricing should know that JetBlue cannot match the ultra-low-cost fares Spirit was known for. However, Geraghty emphasized that the airline focuses on delivering value through included amenities such as free Wi-Fi, complimentary snacks, seatback entertainment screens, and extra legroom that other carriers charge extra for.

The expansion also brings exciting news for East Coast travelers, with JetBlue announcing 370 connecting flight opportunities through Fort Lauderdale. This enhanced network positions the airport as a major hub for passengers traveling throughout the eastern United States, benefiting both loyal JetBlue customers and those seeking new options after Spirit’s exit.
