Miami Climate Faces Rising Heat Risks and Environmental Changes

Urban areas like Miami Beach experience the urban heat island effect, where built environments absorb and re-radiate heat, creating hotspots. Climate change will likely increase water demand as higher air temperatures enhance evaporation rates.

Prolonged exposure to heat indices exceeding 80°F, which account for temperature combined with humidity, can lead to heat-related illnesses such as fatigue, cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke. Temperature fluctuations at a given location are influenced by the sun’s angle and the length of daylight hours throughout the year.
