Hegseth Blasts NATO Allies, Announces Review of US Troops in Europe

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a sharp rebuke to NATO allies during a meeting in Brussels on Thursday, announcing a comprehensive six-month review of American military forces stationed across Europe. The Pentagon chief made clear that the future of U.S. troop deployments will hinge on how quickly European nations step up to take primary responsibility for their own defense.

Hegseth expressed outrage at European partners who refused to grant American forces access to military bases for launching operations against Iran, calling their decision ‘shameful.’ He argued that these allies endangered American service members by denying them predictable access, basing rights, and overflight permissions that should never have been questioned in the first place.

The defense secretary called for a complete transformation of the 32-nation alliance into what he described as ‘NATO 3.0’ – a hard-line military organization capable of deterring any threat on the continent. His comments follow recent announcements that Washington would no longer guarantee certain warships and aircraft support if an ally comes under attack, leaving European nations and Canada scrambling to address potential military gaps.

As part of the administration’s broader defense strategy, Hegseth revealed plans for a massive $1.5 trillion investment in American defense capabilities by 2027, which he called an ‘arsenal of freedom.’ This initiative aims primarily to protect American interests while also supporting NATO allies. The shift reflects Washington’s desire to prepare for potential simultaneous conflicts, particularly keeping resources available should tensions escalate with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

While the U.S. is scaling back its potential military contributions under NATO’s Article 5 collective defense guarantee, officials have confirmed that American nuclear weapons stationed in Europe will remain in place as a key component of the alliance’s deterrence strategy.
