The NBC News poll, conducted by bipartisan polling firms, found that while most Americans remain optimistic about national unity on issues like race and gender, that hope vanishes when it comes to economic class. This sentiment crosses all demographic lines, including age groups, political affiliations, and racial backgrounds.
Respondents interviewed by the news outlet painted a vivid picture of economic disconnect. A 30-year-old manufacturing worker from Tennessee described the situation bluntly, stating that wealthy Americans and working people exist in completely separate realities. A Wisconsin resident working in food service management noted that affluent Americans lack empathy because they simply do not experience the same financial struggles as ordinary citizens.
The survey also uncovered deep concerns about access to power and justice. An overwhelming 82% of respondents agreed that regular Americans, regardless of political party, have more in common with each other than with those who hold significant power in the country. Even more troubling, 86% believe that wealthy individuals can often escape consequences that ordinary people would face for identical actions.
Some participants offered a more nuanced view, suggesting that differences between economic classes come down to opportunities rather than fundamental values. However, the overall message remains clear: most Americans feel that money creates not just a financial gap, but a complete separation in how people experience life, politics, and even the justice system in the United States.
