Hollywood Man Acts as Own Lawyer After Setting Home on Fire

A dramatic court appearance unfolded Thursday morning in Fort Lauderdale when a Hollywood man accused of intentionally setting his own home ablaze chose to represent himself before a Broward County judge, insisting the fire was simply an attempt to get rid of rats.

Kevin Lamar Bryant, 38, faces serious charges after a tense standoff with police that began early Wednesday morning on the 5200 block of Wiley Street in Hollywood. According to authorities, officers responded to a disturbance call around 1:30 a.m., but Bryant barricaded himself inside the residence. Several hours later, around 4 a.m., he allegedly set the property on fire while still inside.

During his court appearance, Bryant rejected the arson charges with an unusual defense. He told the judge the fire was intentional but controlled, claiming the smoke was meant to drive out rodents infesting the property. When the judge warned him that his statements could be used against him, Bryant remained defiant, arguing that setting fire to his own residence does not constitute arson.

The situation grew tense as Bryant became visibly frustrated, throwing his hands up and shaking his head during the proceedings. When asked about his legal qualifications, he confidently stated he did not need to pass the Florida bar exam to understand his rights. Rescue officials noted that Bryant has a history of severe mental illness and was taken to the hospital for evaluation following the incident.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze but reported extensive damage to the interior of the home, which authorities say had been previously condemned. The judge ultimately ordered Bryant held without bail. He now faces charges including first-degree arson, disorderly conduct, obstructing a roadway, and littering over 500 pounds.
