A striking display of Iranian military drone technology at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables has ignited serious discussions about national security and Cuba’s increasingly close ties with Tehran. The exhibit, organized by the bipartisan group United Against Nuclear Iran and led by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, aimed to draw attention to alarming reports suggesting Iranian weapons systems may now be stationed just 90 miles from American shores.
The demonstration featured an Iranian drone capable of traveling approximately 2,500 kilometers, a range that would allow it to reach major American cities including New York if launched from Cuban territory. Congressman Carlos Gimenez, representing Florida, emphasized the magnitude of the threat, noting that Iran produces these unmanned aircraft by the thousands and warning that their capabilities are rapidly advancing with artificial intelligence integration.
Mark Wallace, CEO of the nonprofit organization and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, stressed that the security landscape has fundamentally changed with modern weapons technology. He pointed to Iran’s strategic presence in Cuba and Venezuela, suggesting these partnerships are directly linked to their proximity to U.S. military installations, particularly Central Command bases in the region. Wallace urged policymakers to develop comprehensive strategies to counter these emerging threats in America’s backyard.
However, not all experts share the same level of alarm. Cuban affairs analyst Dr. Andy Gomez acknowledged the evolving nature of modern warfare but expressed skepticism about an actual drone attack from the island. He noted that Cuba has characterized its drone arsenal as purely defensive and suggested that any aggressive action against the United States would result in devastating consequences for the Cuban regime. Nevertheless, Gomez echoed Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s assessment that a failed state in such close proximity to Florida remains a persistent national security concern regardless of its weapons capabilities.
