Inter Miami began its preseason with bad news after confirming the injury of Sergio Reguilón, one of its star signings for the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The Spanish full-back suffered a right knee injury during the friendly against Alianza Lima last weekend.
Thru an official statement, the club managed by Javier Mascherano announced that, following the corresponding medical examinations, it was determined that the player has a knee sprain, with no exact recovery time specified.

Sergio Reguilón’s medical report: what injury did he suffer?
Inter Miami detailed that the former Real Madrid, Tottenham, and Manchester United player suffered a Grade II knee sprain, ruling out any major ligament or meniscus damage, as had initially been speculated.
“The player has undergone medical examinations that confirmed he suffered a Grade II knee sprain in his right leg, and his timeline for returning to the field will be determined as his recovery progresses”, the club reported.
These types of injuries typically require between four and six weeks of recovery, depending on the player’s progress.
Will Reguilón be ready for Inter Miami’s MLS debut in 2026?
The main question is whether Sergio Reguilón will be available for the start of the MLS season, scheduled for February 21, when Inter Miami faces LAFC, a team known as the Black & Gold, where Heung-Min Son plays.
With the usual recovery times, Reguilón’s debut in MLS and the Concacaf Champions Cup could be delayed, especially considering that the round of 16 of the continental tournament is one of the club’s major goals for the season.

Inter Miami starts its preseason tour with a loss
In addition to the injury, Inter Miami kicked off their 2026 Champions Tour on the wrong foot, falling 3-0 to Alianza Lima in a match laden with symbolism for Peruvian fans and sparking various reactions on social media.
Despite the result, Lionel Messi’s team will continue its South American tour with the aim of fine-tuning tactical and physical details before the official start of the season.
