Cooperation against organized crime and immigration control
During the dialog, Donald Trump highlighted the close security collaboration between the two countries to combat transnational criminal networks and strengthen border surveillance. From the perspective of the United States, Honduras is a strategic partner in the fight against drug trafficking, gangs, and irregular migration.
Analysts point out that this political approach aims to consolidate regional alliances in a context marked by migratory pressure and the impact of organized crime in Central America. In that context, the issue of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) was also addressed, under which thousands of Hondurans reside legally in the United States. President Nasry Asfura raised the need to provide certainty and stability to the beneficiaries of the program.
Bilateral trade, investment, and economic development
In addition to the security agenda, the meeting included key topics such as trade between the United States and Honduras and the attraction of foreign investment. Asfura proposed reviewing tariffs that impact strategic products of the Honduran economy and establishing technical commercial negotiation tables.
One of the highlighted projects was a railroad infrastructure proposal in Honduras, designed to improve logistical connectivity and spur economic growth. Likewise, sectors such as technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and manufacturing were identified as priority areas for future investments.
