Long before South Beach became synonymous with high-end clubs and celebrity sightings, Penrod’s opened in the late 1980s as a casual beachfront gathering place. In 1998, the space at 1 Ocean Drive was reimagined as Nikki Café, a quiet, elegant retreat by the ocean created by entrepreneur Jack Penrod in memory of his daughter Nicole.
The concept quickly evolved into Nikki Beach, a name that would become synonymous with upscale beach club culture worldwide. Penrod passed away last year at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy deeply woven into Miami Beach’s identity.
