Miami continues its urban transformation with significant progress on one of the most ambitious engineering projects in its recent history. This mega infrastructure project aims to improve mobility, reorganize traffic flow, and redefine the city’s urban landscape.

Connecting Miami

The initiative, known as Connecting Miami, involves the construction of a new structure over the highway corridor formed by I-395, SR-836, and I-95. The project includes building a monumental bridge with six soaring arches exceeding 100 meters in height.

As of December 2025, two of these arches are already complete, and the third has 86 prefabricated segments installed, representing a major step forward towards finishing the project.

Improvements to City Traffic Flow

The construction of this bridge is part of a larger effort to modernize a road network considered outdated for the current traffic. Project also includes creating a double-decker elevated highway over SR-836 to organize the flow of vehicles traveling between the city’s main routes. This mprove connectivity between neighborhoods historically separated by the existing road infrastructure.

The total investment exceeds $866 million, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029. To achieve this, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Greater Miami Expressway Agency, and the Archer Western–de Moya Group Joint Venture construction consortium coordinate the various project stages, from installing foundations and main beams to placing the bridge’s prefabricated segments.

Pedestrian Zone

Beyond its impact on mobility, the project includes public-use components under the elevated highway. There will be green spaces, pedestrian walkways, and bike paths are planned to connect different communities and foster social cohesion.

Over 22 hectares will be dedicated for these purposes, offering new recreational areas for residents and visitors alike. Authorities highlighted that, in addition to managing necessary temporary detours and overnight closures to advance the work, complementary drainage systems and street elevation have been implemented.

These will help mitigate flooding caused by high tides, a recurring challenge in this coastal city. With this progress, Miami not only aims to provide solutions to structural traffic congestion problems. Also to position itself as a benchmark for urban infrastructure innovation in the United States, with a project that could become an internationally recognizable architectural icon.
