Creek Country Club: the private Miami club keeping Jeff Bezos out despite his fortune

South Florida has become a prime destination for America’s ultra-wealthy. Waterfront mansions, yachts, and private estates define a real estate market where money opens many doors.

Yet, there are places where a multi-billion-dollar fortune does not guarantee entry.

That is the situation facing Jeff Bezos. The Amazon founder owns three homes in Indian Creek—one of Miami’s most exclusive islands—but has yet to gain admission to the Indian Creek Country Club, the private club located within the same community.

Bezos purchased his three properties for approximately $234 million and boasts a net worth exceeding $252 billion. Even so, his application for membership remains without a public response.

Indian Creek Country Club and its exclusive admission process

Founded in 1929, the Indian Creek Country Club has around 350 members. Its facilities include an 18-hole golf course, a Mediterranean-style clubhouse, and a bayfront swimming pool.

The initiation fee hovers around $1 million, and members pay close to $44,000 annually. However, money alone is not enough to secure membership.

Aspiring members must have the backing of two current members and submit five letters of recommendation. They are also required to attend events and participate in activities with club members before their candidacy reaches the committee responsible for reviewing applications.

That six-member committee selects the candidates who will advance to the next stage. Subsequently, a 15-member board decides who gets in.

Bezos began seeking that support in February, when he and Lauren Sánchez Bezos attended the club’s annual party. The couple attended as guests, and the businessman mingled with several members.

Six months later, Bezos is still waiting. His case is notable because it demonstrates that—even in Indian Creek, where properties command multi-million-dollar prices—vast wealth does not guarantee membership.
