Origins and Early Development of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival
The South Beach Wine & Food Festival, now recognized as a prominent culinary event in Miami, traces its origins back to 1997 when it started as a single-day fundraiser named the Florida Extravaganza. This initial event was organized by the Florida International University School of Hospitality. In 2002, the festival adopted the title South Beach Wine & Food FestivalĀ® and took place from March 15 to 17, drawing nearly 7,000 attendees who participated in a variety of dinners, seminars, and notable signature events.
Lee Brian Schrager played a crucial role in expanding the event by relocating it from the Florida International University campus to Miamiās South Beach. His vision helped transform what began as a modest one-day gathering into a significant cultural happening. He has described how a combination of boredom, a borrowed pen, and a creative idea contributed to the festivalās evolution over the years.

Today, the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival spans four days, occurring annually in mid-February in Miami. It offers a platform for showcasing wines, spirits, and culinary expertise, highlighting renowned chefs from across the country. By 2025, the festival had completed its 24th year and garnered corporate sponsorship from Capital One. The event continues to grow in size and influence each year.
In celebration of its 25th anniversary in 2026, the festival placed special emphasis on honoring the chefs and businesses that have been part of its journey. This milestone highlighted the ongoing dedication to elevating local talent and fostering community involvement through the festivalās diverse programming. The event remains a key fixture in Miamiās cultural calendar, attracting food enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
