Inter Miami, the team led by Lionel Messi and current Major League Soccer (MLS) champion, announced on Monday the signing of Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilón, who becomes the official replacement for Jordi Alba, recently retired from professional soccer.

The arrival of the European defender represents a key move for the Florida side, which seeks to maintain its dominance in MLS and bolster its squad ahead of upcoming domestic and international tournaments.

Sergio Reguilón, Inter Miami’s new signing

At 28 years old, Sergio Reguilón joins Inter Miami as a free agent after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur of England expired last July. The Spanish footballer has a distinguished career in European soccer, including:

  • 2018 FIFA Club World Cup champion with Real Madrid
  • 2020 Europa League champion with Sevilla
  • Six international matches with the Spanish national team.

Reguilón expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Herons, highlighting the competitive nature of the sporting project.

«It’s a very ambitious project, a winning club that’s doing things right, and that’s what attracted me: coming here to keep winning and competing», the full-back said.

Contract until 2027 with an option to extend

The former Real Madrid player signed a contract with Inter Miami thru December 2027, with the option to extend the deal for an additional season, reinforcing the club’s commitment to stability and continuity in its defensive lineup.

«My goal is to keep winning, go for the trophies we’re missing, and win everything here», the Spanish footballer added.

Jordi Alba’s replacement on the left flank

Reguilón will take the place of Jordi Alba, one of the team’s key players, who retired from professional soccer after winning the first league title in Inter Miami’s history earlier this month.

Alba’s departure, coupled with Sergio Busquets’ retirement after the MLS Cup Final, marks the end of a golden era for the former FC Barcelona players who accompanied Lionel Messi on his adventure in the United States.

Luis Suárez’s future remains up in the air

Despite the arrival of Reguilón and the continued presence of figures like Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul, Inter Miami could suffer another high-profile departure: that of striker Luis Suárez.

The Uruguayan striker’s contract expires in December, and so far it hasn’t been renewed, so his future in MLS remains uncertain.
