After facing criticism for representing Cuba in Miss Universe 2025, Lina Luaces spoke out and even revealed the reason behind her tribute to her mother, Lili Estefan. At just 23 years old, she became only the second woman in 50 years to represent the island, and her participation did not go unnoticed.
She was initially questioned for representing her parents’ home country while living in Miami, Florida. However, it was clarified months ago that she met all the pageant’s requirements, and she showed her determination by placing in the top 10 of the competition.
“I learned so much and I feel much more confident in myself, and I surprised myself. Many people thought I wouldn’t do a good job, and I think I did spectacularly,” she said in an interview with Univision.

The 23-year-old also shared the reason she decided to use her mother’s last name, even though the pageant rules indicated she should participate using only her father’s surname.
“For a long time I was embarrassed because I didn’t want to cause controversy,” she admitted, “but at the same time I said: ‘I am Luaces and Estefan. Both of you made the sacrifice of leaving Cuba and creating this life for me, for my generation; so I want to honor that,’” she explained.
Unlike most of her fellow contestants, Lina used both of her last names (Luaces and Estefan) during her Miss Universe 2025 introduction to highlight her roots, her family pride, and her parents’ story of seeking a better life.
