A violent confrontation at a Miami bus stop left one man in critical condition and another behind bars facing serious charges. Maurice Yoelcis Sapp, 61, was arrested Wednesday afternoon after allegedly stabbing a fellow man multiple times during a heated argument near Northwest Seventh Avenue and 61st Street.
Police Respond to Disturbing Scene
Miami police officers were alerted to the incident around 4:30 p.m. when a man flagged them down while holding a knife. Upon arrival, officers discovered Sapp, who is listed as homeless in official records, gripping a knife in his right hand while simultaneously grabbing the shirt of another individual. The officer immediately ordered Sapp to drop the weapon, and he complied without resistance.
Victim Suffers Critical Injuries
The victim was found with severe bleeding from a large wound on the left side of his face. Miami Fire Rescue medics rushed him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where medical staff listed his condition as critical. According to investigators, the victim sustained multiple stab wounds to his left cheek, left shoulder, and upper abdomen.
Witness Account Reveals Escalating Dispute
A woman who was sitting near Sapp on the bus bench provided crucial testimony to detectives. She reported witnessing Sapp approach the victim initially, followed by a verbal altercation between the two men. After Sapp returned to the bench, the victim allegedly approached him to continue the argument. The witness stated she heard Sapp say “Say it again” before attacking the victim with a black pocketknife.
During his interview with detectives, Sapp claimed the victim had grabbed his shirt during the dispute. He admitted to removing the victim’s hand and stabbing him three to four times with a pocketknife that had been sitting beside him on the bench. Notably, Sapp acknowledged that the victim was unarmed throughout the entire encounter.
Suspect Held Without Bond
After reviewing all statements and evidence, investigators determined that Sapp was the primary aggressor in the incident. He now faces one count of attempted second-degree murder with a deadly weapon and is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer has ordered Sapp to have no contact with the victim. Authorities have not disclosed what sparked the fatal argument between the two men.
